Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

About Greenier

Who is Greenier and what is its mission? Greenier is a greentech company specializing in massive reforestation and carbon capture. Our mission is to develop innovative and automated solutions to restore ecosystems while fighting climate change. Thanks to our Seedpods, Seedbox and large-scale seeding methods, we facilitate forest regeneration quickly, efficiently and sustainably.

How does Greenier contribute to reforestation and carbon capture? We use an advanced technological approach to produce, disperse and monitor encapsulated seeds capable of germinating in optimal conditions. Our solutions accelerate reforestation in degraded areas and capture COâ‚‚ while restoring biodiversity.

What are the main challenges of large-scale reforestation? Major challenges include the high cost of traditional plantations, the difficulty of accessing the areas to be restored, the low survival rate of seedlings which are eaten by wildlife, and the need to adapt to local conditions. Greenier is responding to these challenges by developing biodegradable Seedpods, automating their production so that large volumes of new plants can be produced on site, and using drones to monitor growth over vast territories.

Seedpods - What are they and how do they work?

What is a Seedpod? A Seedpod is a biodegradable capsule containing several seeds, nutrients, protective agents and a coating designed to optimize germination. It acts as a natural mini-incubator, protecting the seed and promoting its growth once dispersed in nature.

What's in a Seedpod? Each Seedpod contains : - Several seeds adapted to the target ecosystem - Nutrients to support germination and early growth - Natural protective agents to prevent pest attacks and withstand harsh conditions - A biodegradable coating to regulate humidity and improve germination chances

How do you ensure that the seeds will germinate and adapt to their environment? We carefully select species according to local climatic and soil conditions. Our Seedpods are laboratory and field tested to ensure a high germination rate and optimal adaptation to natural environments.

What is the shelf life of a Seedpod before planting? Our Seedpods are designed to be stored for several months without losing their germination potential. Depending on the species, their shelf life varies from 6 to 12 months in optimal conditions (controlled temperature and humidity), which means they can be sown in spring and autumn.

Are Seedpods suitable for all soil types and climates? Seedpods are not the ultimate solution for all soils. Some sloping or arid soils do not allow the use of Seedpods alone, but could be used in conjunction with other existing techniques such as soil decompaction, swale digging, soil amendment and planting. Seedpods are complementary in these situations to protect and diversify plants. We develop different formulations of seedpods and nutrients adapted to dry, sandy, clayey or wet soils. Each project is designed to maximize seeding success in its specific environment.

The Seedbox - An ecosystem in a box

What is a Seedbox? A Seedbox is a storage and transport unit containing a selection of Seedpods adapted to a specific site. Each Seedbox is designed to group together different species and plant strata, optimizing the seeding and regeneration of the ecosystem. We develop Seedboxes for specific ecosystems for a given use case, enabling us to adapt them to suit the specific features of the site.

How does the Seedbox work? Depending on the species selected, the Seedbox organizes the Seedpods before dispersal, classifying them by species and strata (trees, shrubs, ground cover). This facilitates precise and efficient seeding, reproducing a natural forest structure. Unlike seed mixes available elsewhere, our Seedboxes provide variety and complete latitude over the layout.

Greenier seeding - From manufacturing to planting

How does seeding with Greenier work? The process follows these key steps: - Analysis of site conditions and design of the appropriate Seedbox. - Seedpod production - We manufacture Seedpods in our production units or via Seedboxes deployed in the field. - On-site dispersal - We use manual seeding to effectively disperse Seedpods over targeted areas, giving the space a natural look. - Monitoring and optimization - Using sensors and satellite images, we monitor germination and seedling growth to adjust our methods.

How do you monitor plantations after seeding? We combine several technologies: - Satellite imagery and drones to monitor plant growth. - Artificial intelligence algorithms to estimate success rates and adjust future operations. - On-site monitoring to assess species growth and determine reseeding requirements if necessary.

How long does it take to see the first results after seeding? This depends on the species planted and local conditions, but in general, the first shoots appear within a few weeks, and the young trees start to develop significantly after 6 to 12 months.

How does Greenier select reforestation sites? We work with scientists, NGOs and local institutions to identify priority areas. We give priority to areas where reforestation will have the greatest ecological and climatic impact, and a real positive impact on people's environment, such as under-used urban areas, degraded forests, erosion-prone areas or areas in need of rapid restoration.

There are a few clearings in the space, what can I do? Wait until autumn to clearly identify the sparse areas with a small post or an identifier of some kind. You can selectively seed either late in the fall for the majority of tree Seedpods (shrubs, bushes and trees) whose seedlings tolerate winter cold, or the following spring for ground-cover Seedpods, flowers and sub-shrubs. Analogous to the natural process, our Seedpods allow an agile, iterative approach to naturalizing a space.

It seems that some plants don't survive as well as others on the land where we've sown them. This is a normal result, as several factors can influence a plant's survival in the first few years, as well as which are the most adapted, and which are protected and will survive and green the space. Seedpods make it possible to propagate new species in an area and test their adaptability in a limited ecosystem context.

Environmental impact and efficiency

Why are Seedpods more effective than traditional planting? - Seedpods are not a replacement for planting, but rather a complement to it. They provide immediate results, and can multiply the results of planting tenfold. - In an ideal world, every planting project would have a Seedpod seeding portion to provide additional benefits in terms of protection against wildlife, elements and increased biodiversity. - Tenfold impact for the same cost versus traditional planting. For the cost of planting one tree, a range of plants will be sown in quantity. - They make it possible to reforest hard-to-reach areas without heavy work. - Their natural coating protects the seed and increases its germination rate, enabling a greater volume of plants or species to be planted. - Seeding is supported by largely automated production, which speeds up reforestation and reduces costs. - They require fewer resources than conventional planting.

What is the success rate of Seedpods seedlings? Our on-site tests show germination rates of between 30% and 70%, depending on the environment and the species chosen. This varies according to the potential hazards of nature, such as exposure to drought and wildlife.

Does Greenier work with NGOs, governments or companies on its projects? Yes, we mainly work with environmental organizations, local authorities and companies involved in carbon offsetting and reforestation.

How do you ensure that the local ecosystem is respected during seeding? We work with ecologists and specialists to select suitable species, avoid invasive species and restore natural habitats in a sustainable way.

How can you get involved or support Greenier?

Can I buy Seedpods and plant them myself? At present, no. We carry out end-to-end seeding projects to ensure the best possible results. We are aiming to make Seedboxes available to the general public in the future, so that different partners and individuals can benefit from our solution through their greening projects. We are developing a range of Seedpods for the general public, and professionals and private individuals will soon be able to order kits for local greening with species adapted to their region.

How can a company or local authority work with Greenier? We offer tailor-made partnerships for carbon offsetting, reforestation of degraded areas and environmental awareness-raising. Contact us to find out more! Feel free to propose a project with us or contact us at verdir@greenier.ca

Where can I see projects already completed by Greenier? We regularly publish case studies and testimonials on our website and social networks.
